Jarange Patil’s authorised representative seeks application for organising a peaceful protest at Azad Maidan (Pic/Special arrangement)
Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil has sought permission from the Mumbai Police to hold a protest, including a hunger strike, at Azad Maidan from August 29 over the community's long-pending demands.
In a letter addressed to the Mumbai Police Commissioner and the senior police inspector of Azad Maidan police station, Jarange Patil's authorised representative said a peaceful public meeting, agitation, hunger strike and protest would be organised at Azad Maidan under his leadership.
The letter states that the agitation is aimed at pressing the government to fulfil the "just and pending demands" of the Maratha community.
The organisers have assured the police that the proposed agitation will remain peaceful and democratic. According to the letter, the entire protest will be conducted peacefully, and there will be no obstruction to law and order or public arrangements.
The representative has, therefore, requested the police to grant permission for the proposed programme at Azad Maidan from August 29.
The application comes ahead of Jarange Patil's proposed fresh agitation in Mumbai, with the Azad Maidan protest likely to draw a large number of supporters from across Maharashtra. Police are expected to examine the request considering crowd management, traffic and security arrangements in and around the protest venue.
Virendra Pawar, Mumbai co-ordinator, Maratha Samaj said, "We just have to give a notice to conduct protests. Azad Maidan is a place dedicated to conducting protests by the High Court. So, we just have to give a formal notice and we have done that. However, this time we will ensure that it will be more organised and there won't be any law and order situation and neither traffic is affected."
