Mumbai: Mid-Day report reunites African Grey parrot with pet parent

Naina Salian, a 42-year-old woman, was reunited with her beloved African Grey parrot, Coco, on July 11 after the bird went missing nearly a month ago. The reunion was made possible by the keen eye of Milan Gala, a 56-year-old builder from Borivli, who spotted Coco's picture on a WhatsApp group for their society.

Salian, a devoted pet owner, had raised Coco since the parrot was just a fledgling. Devastated by Coco's disappearance on June 12, Salian reached out to mid-day to appeal for help in finding her feathered companion. The news quickly spread, capturing the attention of animal lovers across the region.

Gala, a fellow African Grey parrot owner, happened to stumble upon Coco's photograph on the society's WhatsApp group he was a part of. Recognising the bird's unique features, Milan recalled seeing a post about a missing African Grey on a group specifically dedicated to communication between African Grey owners. Realising the potential match, Milan immediately contacted the Borivli police to report his findings.

Milan Gala said, "On July 10, I spotted Coco's picture on the WhatsApp group, but later heard rumours that Coco had flown away again. However, to my surprise and delight, Coco returned the very next day. Wasting no time, I contacted the police to report the parrot's safe return, ensuring Coco's reunion with its rightful owner."

The Borivli police promptly reached out to Salian, confirming the ring number on Coco's leg band to establish its identity. Overjoyed with the news, Salian and the police coordinated a meeting to verify Coco's identity and facilitate the reunion.

In an emotional encounter, Salian was finally reunited with her precious Coco. Overwhelmed with happiness, she expressed her gratitude to Gala and the Borivli police for their efforts in finding her cherished pet. Salian admitted that she had initially lost faith in humanity due to the prolonged absence of Coco, but this heart-warming reunion restored her belief in the kindness of strangers. As Coco settles back into its familiar surroundings, Salian remains grateful for the compassion and support she received during her pet's absence.
