Heavy rain alert: Schools, colleges shut across Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Monday

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange and red rain alerts for different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, civic bodies and district administrations have declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday, July 6, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students.

Mumbai schools, colleges to remain shut on Monday; offices to function as usual

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Education Department, in a circular issued on Sunday, announced that all government, private, municipal, aided, and unaided primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, as well as colleges in Mumbai, will remain closed on Monday. The decision follows the IMD's orange alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

The BMC has advised citizens to step out only if absolutely necessary and remain vigilant during periods of heavy rain. Government and private offices in Mumbai, however, will function as usual.

Thane declares holiday for anganwadis and schools on Monday

In neighbouring Thane district, District Collector Dr Shrikrishna Panchal declared a holiday for all anganwadis, balwadis, and government and aided primary and secondary schools on Monday. The order cited the IMD's forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy spells at isolated places, and the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas following continuous rainfall over the past two days.

Navi Mumbai schools closed on Monday

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) also announced a holiday for all schools under every management and medium within its jurisdiction on Monday as a precautionary measure in view of the IMD's rainfall forecast. School authorities have been directed to immediately implement the order and inform students, parents and teachers.

Palghar issues school holiday advisory as heavy rain forecast continues

Meanwhile, Palghar District Collector Dr Indu Rani Jakhad authorised primary and secondary schools across the district to declare a holiday on Monday, taking into account the IMD's forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall. School heads have been asked to assess local weather conditions before taking a decision and arrange online classes, if required.

Mumbai records heavy rainfall as IMD forecasts more showers

The precautionary measures come after several parts of Mumbai recorded significant rainfall on Sunday, with Vikhroli receiving 75 mm, Santacruz 66.4 mm and Sion 56.5 mm, according to civic data.

The IMD has forecast continued rainfall over the next couple of days, with the possibility of waterlogging and traffic disruptions in vulnerable areas. Authorities have urged residents to follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and remain alert as the active monsoon phase continues.
