Heavy monsoon showers continued to lash Mumbai on Thursday, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reporting 91 tree-fall incidents, nine short circuits, and four house collapse incidents across the city and suburbs. A 55-year-old man also died after falling into an open manhole in Sakinaka while grill installation work was underway.
According to the BMC's latest monsoon situation report, Mumbai recorded moderate rainfall between 8 am and 6 pm, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continuous rainfall over the next 24 hours, with heavy to very heavy rain at several places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
As of 6 pm, Mumbai City recorded an average rainfall of 23 mm, while the eastern and western suburbs received 28 mm and 32 mm, respectively.
The IMD's Colaba observatory - which is representative of the island city - recorded 158 mm of rainfall in the preceding 24 hours, with 15.6 mm recorded till 5.30 pm on Thursday. The Santacruz observatory, which represents the suburbs, recorded 205 mm during the same 24-hour period, including 17.4 mm till 5.30 pm.
The BMC reported 91 tree-fall incidents across Mumbai, including 13 in the city, 22 in the eastern suburbs, and 56 in the western suburbs. Civic teams were deployed to clear fallen trees and debris.
In one of the major incidents, a tree fell on BMC personnel inspecting another fallen tree at Relief Road near Raheja College in Santacruz West at 2.02 pm. Eight civic workers sustained injuries and were admitted to Nanavati Hospital. The BMC said all of them were in stable condition.
The injured were identified as Noor Alam (26), Rajesh Kudalkar (51), Vinay Kadam (38), Suleman Sheikh (28), Vinod Bhat (46), Devashish Singh (28), Jagdish Nikam (28), and Nilad Tule (67).
In a separate incident, Aslam Sheikh (55) died after falling into an open manhole at Khairani Road near Samman Hotel, opposite SJ Studio in Sakinaka at around 12.26 pm.
According to the BMC, grill installation work was underway when the pedestrian fell into the manhole. Fire Brigade personnel rescued him using breathing apparatus, tripods, and ladders before rushing him to Rajawadi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The BMC also recorded nine short-circuit incidents - seven in Mumbai City and one each in the eastern and western suburbs. No injuries were reported.
Four incidents involving partial house or wall collapses were also reported, two each in the eastern and western suburbs. No casualties or injuries were reported in these incidents.
The IMD has predicted continued rainfall over Mumbai during the next 24 hours, with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places and extremely heavy showers at isolated locations.
The BMC said road and railway traffic across Mumbai and its suburbs remained normal as of 6 pm.
Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged areas, and report emergencies to civic authorities.
