Mumbai records light rainfall; 11 short-circuit incidents, 10 tree-fall complaints reported in 24 hours

Mumbai witnessed light rainfall over the past 24 hours, while civic authorities responded to multiple rain-related incidents, including short circuits, tree falls and partial house collapse complaints, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) latest monsoon situation report.

The report, covering the period from 8 am on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday, stated that the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Colaba observatory recorded 6.2 mm rainfall, while Santacruz recorded 0.8 mm during the 24-hour period.

Cumulative rainfall for the season stood at 378.9 mm at Colaba observatory and 285.5 mm at Santacruz observatory, significantly lower than the corresponding figures recorded by the same date last year.

According to BMC's automatic rain gauge network, the city recorded an average rainfall of 5.80 mm, the eastern suburbs received 5.29 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 3.74 mm during the reporting period.

The IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky over Mumbai and its suburbs during the next 24 hours, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 32.4 degrees Celsius at Colaba and 34.4 degrees Celsius at Santacruz, while the minimum temperatures stood at 26.2 degrees Celsius and 26.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Reservoir storage remains low

The BMC's Hydraulic Engineer's Department reported that the combined usable water stock in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai stood at 102,460 million litres.

Among the reservoirs, Upper Vaitarna remained at a critical level with no usable live storage and received only 8 mm rainfall in its catchment. Modak Sagar received 69 mm rainfall, Tansa 101 mm, Middle Vaitarna 71 mm, Bhatsa 88 mm, Vehar 180 mm and Tulsi recorded the highest rainfall at 311 mm.

Eleven short-circuit incidents reported

The civic body said 11 short-circuit incidents were reported across Mumbai during the past 24 hours, including seven in the city, one in the eastern suburbs and three in the western suburbs. Power utilities were informed immediately, and no injuries were reported.

Ten tree-fall complaints received

BMC also received 10 complaints of fallen trees and branches, including two from the city, two from the eastern suburbs and six from the western suburbs. Civic teams have been deployed for removal work, and no injuries were reported.

Three wall and house collapse complaints

Three complaints of partial house or wall collapses were reported from the eastern suburbs. The concerned departments initiated verification and relief work. No casualties or injuries were reported.

Two separate fatalities reported

The report also mentioned two separate incidents.

In the first, the body of 17-year-old Majid Khan, who had drowned at Aksa Beach on June 26 between INS Hamla and Shitaladevi Temple, was recovered from the seashore on June 27. The body was handed over to the local police and shifted to BDBA Kandivali Shatabdi Hospital for further legal formalities.

In another incident, 24-year-old Nihal Nazim Mirza died after falling into an open drain at JVPD Scheme on V.P. Road in Juhu, Andheri West. He was rescued and rushed to Cooper Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

According to the BMC, road traffic across Mumbai city and suburbs remained smooth as of 9 am on June 28. Both Central Railway and Western Railway suburban services were operating normally.
