Relentless monsoon showers continued to batter the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), leaving large parts of Virar waterlogged and disrupting transport services for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. According to the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), the civic body recorded 215 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, pushing the region into a flood-like situation. Continuous downpours and inadequate drainage have left several parts of the city inundated, severely disrupting daily life.

Yashwant Nagar Circle is among the worst-hit areas in Virar West. Residents have remained stranded in homes amid prolonged power outages and communication disruptions, questioning whether authorities care about their plight.

Residents recount days of hardship

"We have been living in extremely difficult conditions for the past two days," said Jayanti Patil, a 62-year-old resident of Marambal Pada in Virar.

"The water inside our house has receded now, but our home was flooded after the heavy rainfall. There was no electricity and no mobile network. I live with my family, including two children aged eight. We did not receive any help from the municipal corporation and remained stranded for days," she told mid-day.com.

Another family member echoed similar concerns, saying, "There is no availability of food or government aid. We have been left helpless."

No milk, no electricity, no way out

"The area has remained flooded for the past couple of days, and the situation is only getting worse," said Dharmendra Mandal, a resident of Vasai. "There is no milk available, and vegetable prices have shot up. Earlier, 250 grams of vegetables cost Rs 20; now the same quantity costs Rs 50. We have no electricity, no mobile network, and no connectivity. Life has come to a complete standstill. If someone needs urgent medical attention, neither an ambulance nor a private vehicle can make its way through these waterlogged streets."

Transport services hit

The heavy rainfall severely impacted suburban rail operations, with commuters facing significant delays due to water accumulation on tracks and adverse weather conditions.

Bus and autorickshaw services also came to a complete halt, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and bringing normal life to a standstill across the Vasai-Virar region.

Concerns over civic response

With rainfall continuing across the region, residents have raised concerns over inadequate drainage infrastructure and alleged delays in relief efforts, saying several areas remain submerged with little civic assistance reaching those affected.

As the rain continues to lash the region, flood-hit families are awaiting relief while authorities monitor the evolving situation.
