Mumbai: One dead, 10 injured after fall into pit at Bhandup construction site

A late-night accident near a mall in Bhandup (West) killed one and left 10 others injured after a group of people reportedly fell into a pit at an under-construction SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) building site.

As per the official statement from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the incident was first reported at 11:29 pm on Thursday, April 23, near Metro Mall, close to Janata Market. Officials further issued an update on Friday, 8:00 am, that the rescue operations are underway.

Preliminary details from the Mumbai Fire Brigade further indicate that the victims, who were near the Matoshri Marriage Hall in the vicinity, accidentally fell into an open pit at the construction site.

Soon after receiving the information about the incident, various agencies, including MFB, police, 108 ambulance services, and local ward staff, were mobilised to the spot and carried out rescue operations.

A total of 11 people were injured in the incident. Of these, one person who has been identified as Bhalchandra Falle (25) was declared dead at Fortis Hospital.

The official statement further noted that two individuals are still admitted to the hospital, while eight individuals were treated and discharged.

At Criticare Hospital, Shreyas Surve (25) is currently admitted and stable, while six others received treatment and were discharged. At Agarwal Hospital, 43-year-old Harishankar Karva is also admitted and stable. Meanwhile, three injured persons treated at Fortis Hospital have been discharged after receiving medical care.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident, particularly safety measures at the under-construction site.

Labourer dies after fall from 20th floor at construction site in Malad

A 30-year-old labourer died after falling from the 20th floor of an under-construction building in Malad (West), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Wednesday.

Incident reported a day later

According to the BMC, the incident occurred at around 10:10 pm on April 22 at the Vedang Viveda building in Evershine Nagar. However, the civic body received information about the accident only on April 23 at 9:14 pm.

Fall linked to safety concerns

Preliminary information shared with the BMC by Bangur Nagar Police indicated that the worker fell from a height of 20 floors. Officials said the fall was reportedly linked to inadequate safety measures at the construction site, along with poor lighting conditions.
