Pipes allegedly discharging muddy water and construction sludge from a Juhu Tara Road construction site onto Juhu beach have been removed following a mid-day report highlighting the pollution concern. Marine ecologist Shaunak Modi, who had flagged the discharge, confirmed during a follow-up visit on November 2 that the pipes were no longer present.

On October 27, mid-day reported that the construction site had allegedly been discharging muddy water and sludge onto the beach and into the sea for several days, raising concerns about marine pollution and potential damage to coastal ecosystems.

Modi, director of the Coastal Conservation Foundation and founder of Marine Life of Mumbai, had first flagged the issue in a post on X on October 24, warning that the discharge could harm marine organisms and disrupt the coastal ecosystem.

The discharge had eroded more than a foot of beach sand, while a large stretch was covered in fine mud. The sediment could settle over seabed organisms and reduce water clarity, adding to the potential ecological impact.

Pipes removed after follow-up

On October 24, the BMC's K West ward office responded to Modi's post, stating that the complaint had been registered on the civic body's MARG portal. The complaint number provided was KW_202600154276.

"During a follow-up visit on October 26, I was disappointed to see that the pipes were still discharging water onto the beach. However, I am glad action has now been taken. Both pipes have been removed, and the spring high tide has also levelled the sand eroded by the discharge," Modi told mid-day.

BMC response awaited

mid-day contacted the BMC to ascertain whether it had taken action or whether the developer responsible for the construction site had removed the pipes. The civic body had not responded by press time.
