The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday urged Mumbai residents to avoid stepping out unless necessary as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the city.
The weather department has forecast intense rainfall across the Mumbai metropolitan region along with strong winds reaching speeds of 80 to 90 kmph.
In view of the warning, the civic body has advised people to remain cautious and avoid visiting areas that could pose safety risks during heavy rain.
Residents have been asked to maintain a safe distance from trees, unsafe buildings, hoardings, electric poles and other potentially dangerous locations. The BMC has also advised people not to park vehicles under trees and avoid visiting the seashore and flood-prone areas.
The civic body appealed to residents not to trust unverified information and urged them to rely only on official advisories.
"Citizens should not believe in rumours and must strictly follow only the advisories and alerts disseminated through official channels. Strictly adhere to the guidelines and instructions issued from time to time by the administration and disaster management agencies. In emergency situations, contact the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's helpline number 1916 for immediate assistance," said BMC in its appeal posted on X.
The civic body said emergency response teams remain active across the city and are working to handle rain-related situations.
The BMC said around 15,000 officers and employees from the civic body and various agencies have been deployed on the ground and are working continuously across different areas.
Senior officials are monitoring developments and coordinating response measures to tackle issues caused by the heavy rainfall.
"Considering this, citizens should remain vigilant. Additionally, the instructions issued from time to time by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Police should be strictly followed," said the Mumbai civic body.
It further added, "Your safety and vigilance are of utmost importance."
Continuous rainfall has led to flooding and severe waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai. Areas including Andheri Milan Subway, Kurla, Chunabhatti, Ghatkopar and Sion Pratiksha Nagar reported water accumulation.
Many residents faced difficulties while travelling through flooded areas. Following the heavy rainfall warning, authorities declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Mumbai.
Train services on Central, Western and Harbour lines were also affected due to rainfall and waterlogging at several locations.
The BMC received more than 400 complaints related to tree falls and branch collapses across the city during the heavy rainfall.
Recent incidents involving falling trees in Chembur, Kurla and Aarey Colony have raised concerns among residents and activists over tree safety.
