Mumbai woke up to light pre-monsoon rain on Sunday morning, May 31, with scattered showers reported across the city and its suburbs. The rainfall provided much-needed relief from rising temperatures and humidity levels.
According to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), rainfall during the early hours on Sunday remained light in Mumbai, with uneven distribution across different parts of the city.
The island city area recorded just 0.61 mm of rainfall, indicating very light showers in comparison to the eastern suburbs which received relatively higher rainfall at 5 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 2 mm during the same period.
This shows that the eastern suburbs experienced more intense pre-monsoon activity than other parts of Mumbai. However, rainfall was largely scattered and not uniform across the city, with certain pockets witnessing significantly higher precipitation, as seen in localized readings from specific areas.
Several locations recorded higher rainfall during the morning spell. The highest was reported in Chembur, where Collectors Colony Municipal School recorded 27 mm of rain.
Meanwhile, in the eastern suburbs, Vaibhav Nagar Municipal School and Mankhurd Fire Station recorded 22 mm of rainfall, indicating one of the heaviest localised spells, followed by MPS Maharashtra Nagar School with 17 mm and Ramabai Municipal School in Ghatkopar with 11 mm. L Ward Office also recorded moderate rainfall at 10 mm.
In the western suburbs, rainfall was similarly patchy, with BKC Fire Station recording 22 mm and Santacruz SWM Workshop receiving 17 mm, while Gazdar Bandh Storm Water Pumping Station recorded 12 mm. Overall, the data highlights a highly uneven rainfall pattern across Mumbai, with isolated pockets witnessing moderate to heavy showers despite relatively low average rainfall in the city and suburban divisions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Nowcast Yellow Warning in morning. The alert predicted light spells of rain with possible thunder and lightning in some areas of Thane and Raigad districts. Citizens were advised to take necessary precautions.
As per RDMC-TMC data, rainfall in Thane region also remained scattered over the last 22 hours, with most hourly readings showing no rainfall. However, light showers were recorded in the early morning hours ranging between 0.76 mm-1.52mm with a total of 2.28 mm rain.
While the showers brought relief from humid conditions, some areas experienced brief waterlogging. However, no major incidents or disruptions were reported. Suburban train services and daily transport movement continued without significant delays, reported PTI.
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as more pre-monsoon activity is expected in the coming days.
