The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has completed the construction of a waterproof pedestrian subway near Bhiwandi Road station on Central Railway's Panvel-Vasai Road section, providing a safe and all-weather crossing facility for pedestrians and two-wheeler users.
The 68-metre-long underground structure, with an internal size of 2.6 metresX3.0 metres, has been built beneath seven operational railway lines using advanced engineering techniques without disrupting train services. The subway has been designed to withstand heavy freight loading, including operations on the Dedicated Freight Corridor.
According to MRVC, the project involved the installation of four massive precast reinforced concrete segments using a sophisticated hydraulic pushing methodology. The subway has also been equipped with specialised waterproofing systems, including ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber gaskets, high-density poly ethylene (HDPE) membranes, flexible polyolefin (FPO) joint tapes and advanced sealing arrangements to provide long-term protection against water ingress.

MRVC said the successful execution of the technically challenging project beneath active railway lines reflects its commitment to developing modern, safe and resilient infrastructure for the benefit of rail users and local communities.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde conducted inspections at several flood-prone locations in parts of the city as part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) monsoon preparedness review.
Tawade visited the Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Gandhi Market pumping station and Hindmata pumping station to assess the readiness of civic infrastructure ahead of the monsoon season.
Several elected representatives and civic officials accompanied her during the inspection tour.
During the visit to the Andheri Subway, local MLA Murji Patel highlighted the recurring issue of waterlogging in the low-lying area during heavy rainfall.
He said the flooding problem has persisted for years and stressed the need for a permanent solution. Patel added that the issue has been repeatedly raised during legislative sessions.
Civic officials informed the delegation that various proposals are under consideration to permanently address flooding at the subway and that feasible solutions could be implemented in the near future.
