Mumbai rains: Rain fury leaves one dead, one injured, one missing

At least one person was killed, and one person was injured, as heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday. According to information received from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one person was killed in an instance of a house collapse, while one person was injured due to a tree collapse. Another person is missing, with reports of being washed away in Bandra West. Search and rescue operations were going on till the time of going to press. The incident was reported to BMC at 2.14 pm.

In merely 10 hours on Monday, between 8 am and 6 pm, Mumbai received over 100 mm of rain. According to the BMC, the city recorded 107.94 mm of rainfall, with the Eastern suburbs receiving 111.86 mm, and the Western suburbs 121.95 mm, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded Monday's Orange Alert for Mumbai to a Red Alert. The IMD has also issued a Red Alert for today.

Several BMC-owned weather stations even recorded over 150 mm of rain, including Versova (196 mm), Chembur (183 mm), Dadar at 178 mm, Chincholi (175 mm), Vikhroli (172 mm), Worli (167 mm), Wadala (166 mm), Powai (161 mm), Kandivli (161 mm), Andheri (155 mm), Mankhurd (150 mm), and Sion (147 mm).

The heavy rain throughout Monday led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the city, including Dadar's Hindu Colony, Sewri, Dadar TT, the chronic waterlogging spots of Hindamata and Gandhi Market, Andheri, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, and Chembur. Localised flooding was also reported in Malad, Goregaon, Bandra, Bhandup, Worli, and Lower Parel.

Tree falls cause death, one injury

Death reported
At 11.24 am, the wall of a building collapsed on a tree, which led to the tree collapse at Napean Sea Road, near Shimla House, at Hyderabad Estate Quarters, killing one person identified as Satish Tirke, aged 50-55 years.

Injury reported
At 10.35 am on Monday, a tree collapse was reported at Parsi Wadi at Sahar Road, causing injury to one person. The injured person, Jayant Gosavi, 40, was taken to Cooper Hospital by the fire brigade and is in a stable condition.
