Mumbai receives nearly 80 per cent of seasonal rain, outpaces last year's monsoon

Since the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai on June 23, the city has recorded almost 80 per cent of the average seasonal rainfall. Until the morning of Friday, July 24, the Santacruz weather station has recorded 80.73 per cent or 1872.1 mm of the average seasonal rainfall, which is 2319 mm, while Colaba has recorded 74.29 per cent or 1556.3 mm of the average of 2015 mm of rainfall.

By the same day last year, Mumbai had received hardly 50 per cent of its annual average rainfall, with Santacruz and Colaba recording 49.69 per cent and 43.05 per cent, respectively.

Seasonal rainfall till Friday indicates a departure of 38.2 per cent more rainfall recorded at the Colaba observatory, and 54.8 per cent more rainfall recorded at Santacruz.

IMD on Friday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar for Saturday, and a green alert for the rest of the week.

However, Thane and Palghar were under an orange alert on Friday, while Mumbai was on a yellow alert. The IMD has also indicated a high wind speed for Mumbai for Saturday, with strong winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph, and occasionally gusty winds reaching 70 kmph.

Friday's rainfall

In the 24 hours between Thursday and Friday, Colaba recorded 54.8 mm of rainfall, and Santacruz recorded 21.2 mm. During this period, 13 tree/branch collapses and two short circuits occurred.

Two mishaps

As per the information received from the Fire Control Room on Thursday, a 19-year-old man drowned in the Vihar lake in Powai. The remains were retrieved from the water body at 2.15 pm on Friday by the fire brigade personnel and handed over to the local police. According to the information received by the Police Control Room at 12.17 pm on Friday, a woman was injured after a portion of a house slab fell at Bell Mountain Corner Building on SV Road in Chikkuwadi, Borivli West, and has been admitted to Phoenix hospital.
