Rare Leucistic Flapshell Turtle rescued from Mumbai's Chembur

A rare Leucistic Flapshell Turtle was found stranded in Mumbai's Chembur area last week. A local rescued the turtle and approached Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), following which the non-governmental organisation (NGO) initiated a detailed medical evaluation of the animal, soon after taking over the case.

RAWW's President Pawan Sharma said, "Primary findings show that the turtle has a deformed carapace owing to poor quality of life, including diet, water quality and enrichment. An overall evaluation indicates that this may be a case of illegal captivity and poor husbandry. The turtle has been kept under rehabilitation in coordination with the forest department."

Leucism is a genetic disorder or condition resulting in reduced pigmentation, causing white or patchy coloration.

Unlike albinism, leucism does not result in a complete lack of pigmentation. While albinism often causes soft parts like the eyes to appear pink or red, leucism typically leaves these areas unaffected, with the eyes remaining normal.
