At least six people were killed and one injured after two to three ground-plus-three-storey residential structures (chawls) collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area on Sunday night amid heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred around 8.30 pm at Chawl No 5, Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir in Mankhurd.

According to preliminary information, two to three structures collapsed, trapping several residents under the debris.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared a Level-1 incident at 9.07 pm and immediately launched a search and rescue operation. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward staff, and 108 ambulance service rushed to the spot.

Dr Patel from Shatabdi Hospital confirmed that five persons (four women and a man) were brought dead to the hospital.

As per latest updates, the total death toll has risen to six, with one more injured man being declared dead in the hospital. One woman has been injured.

Rescue operations are still underway as teams continue to search for anyone trapped under the rubble.

Further details regarding the identities of the victims and the injured are awaited.

Staircase slab collapses in Thane residential building; five residents rescued safely

A staircase slab collapsed at a residential building in the Diva area of Thane on Sunday, prompting a rescue operation in which five residents were safely evacuated. No injuries were reported in the incident, the civic body stated.

According to the Thane Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell, the incident was reported at 12.52 pm at Datt Nivara Society, a ground-plus-two-storey residential building located behind Vaibhav Dhaba in Sabegaon, Diva West.

Following the alert, personnel from the Diva Ward Committee, including the assistant municipal commissioner, officials from the public works and encroachment departments, as well as the fire brigade, reached the spot with one fire engine and one rescue vehicle.

Firefighters, along with civic staff, removed the damaged portion of the staircase to eliminate the immediate danger. They also safely rescued five residents trapped inside the building.

The rescued residents have been identified as Pradip Malusare (50), Prajakta Malusare (42), Chetan Malusare (21), Ganesh Rane (48), and Aroshi Kumdekar (14).

Further action is being carried out by the Public Works Department, officials said.

According to officials, the information about the incident was received from the Shil Fire Station.
