Mumbai commuters could soon see major infrastructure upgrades in the western suburbs, with outstation trains set to begin operating from Jogeshwari Junction from January 2027 and plans being explored to develop the station into a modern multimodal transit hub featuring a hotel and shopping mall.
The announcement was made during a review meeting between Mumbai North West MP Ravindra Waikar and Western Railway General Manager Ramashray Pandey, where several long-pending railway infrastructure projects in the constituency were discussed.
According to railway officials, Jogeshwari Junction is being developed as a key railway hub with seamless connectivity between railways, Metro services and other modes of transport. The project will include dedicated facilities for car and two-wheeler parking, while a hotel and mall may be added in the second phase, subject to technical and financial feasibility.
The meeting also reviewed progress on the Goregaon-Borivali Harbour Line extension project, which is expected to be completed by March 2029.
The 7.08-km project, estimated at Rs 898.29 crore, is aimed at boosting the capacity of Mumbai's suburban railway network and improving east-west connectivity in the western suburbs.
Railway officials further informed that platform extension work at Andheri station has been completed, enabling operations of 15-coach local trains. Work on extending platforms on the slow corridor between Bandra and Andheri is underway and is expected to facilitate train operations from January 2027.
As part of passenger convenience measures, Western Railway said an additional lift at Andheri station will become operational by October 2026, while two new escalators approved earlier are expected to be completed by June 2027. At Jogeshwari station, one additional escalator has also been approved and is scheduled for completion by June 2027.
The railway administration also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve station infrastructure, including proposals for better passenger amenities, cleanliness measures, breastfeeding rooms and enhanced accessibility facilities.
Officials said the existing 139 railway helpline will continue to serve passengers across the country, while discussions are underway to strengthen safety measures and emergency response services at stations, including the possibility of deploying an ambulance at Jogeshwari station.
