Two men were injured after a portion of the Johnson and Johnson building collapsed during demolition work in Mumbai's Mahim area on Wednesday afternoon.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the incident was reported at 1:48 pm from Senapati Bapat Marg, opposite Mahim Railway Station, where demolition of the ground-plus-three-storey structure was underway by a private contractor using a JCB machine.
During the demolition, the first and second floors of the building suddenly collapsed. Parts of the debris fell on the JCB machine and a four-wheeler parked in the compound of the nearby Amol Apartment, officials said. Some portions of the structure were left hanging precariously.
The entire area has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure, the BMC confirmed.
Two workers, identified as Shahrukh Khan (24) and Mohd. Ayub (24), sustained minor injuries in the incident. They were rushed to Raheja Hospital, where doctors said their condition is stable. An update on the situation was issued by authorities at 4:45 pm.
In another incident, a fire broke out in a building in suburban Ghatkopar (West) on Monday evening, a civic official said, adding that no injuries were reported in the incident and the flames were swiftly extinguished.
The fire inside a closed office on the second floor of Metropole building near Zunzunwala College was reported at around 5.59 pm.
A fire brigade team rushed to the spot and doused it by 6.12 pm, the official said.
The cause of the fire was being ascertained, he said.
Meanwhile, a major fire broke out in a showroom of a leading shoe brand near Crawford Market in south Mumbai late Sunday night, a civic official said.
There is no report of any injury to anyone, he added.
"The blaze started in the ground floor showroom at Dwarkadas Building on Lokmanya Tilak Road. The Mumbai Fire Brigade was alerted about it at 10.26 pm. It was initially classified as Level I but was later upgraded to Level II at 10.44 pm as smoke spread to adjacent shops. The fire was confined to materials inside the showroom of the four-storey building," the official said.
Eight fire engines, six jumbo tankers, one ambulance from 108 service, and other firefighting equipment have been deployed at the site, where operations to control and douse the blaze are underway, he said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, the official said.
