A video purportedly showing a leopard roaming close to a human settlement in Mumbai's Dindoshi area has been circulating on social media platforms and WhatsApp groups. The viral video has triggered concern among residents.

Following the circulation of the video, the Forest Department's team visited the area and sensitised residents about leopard sightings and the precautions they should take.

Forest officials also appealed to residents not to spread unnecessary panic by forwarding the video without proper context.

An official from the Forest Department said, "The area where the leopard was sighted is close to a forest, and such sightings are common. We visited the area and briefed residents on the dos and don'ts, including informing the Forest Department in case of a sighting."

The official also added that leopards may venture close to human settlements in search of stray dogs, which are easy prey. Residents have been advised to remain calm and maintain a safe distance if they encounter a leopard.

He also noted, "Residents need not panic but should maintain a safe distance if they spot a leopard."

Following the viral video of leopard sightings in Dindoshi, the Maharashtra Forest Department has urged residents to remain alert and report any leopard sightings to the authorities instead of circulating videos that could cause unnecessary alarm.

Officials have emphasised the importance of following safety precautions while coexisting with wildlife in areas located close to forested stretches.
