Mumbai: IMD issues yellow alert as thunderstorms and heavy showers continue

Mumbai woke up to moderate spells of rain on Sunday as showers continued to lash several parts of the city since Saturday night. The persistent rainfall has brought cloudy conditions across the city, with more showers expected through the day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and other parts of Maharashtra for the next 24 hours. The weather forecasting agency further warned of thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds at isolated places.

According to IMD, winds could reach speeds of 30-40 kmph during the spell. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly during thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Maharashtra weather: Orange alert in parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada

An orange alert has been issued for Chandrapur and Gadchiroli in Vidarbha, as well as Parbhani, Hingoli, and Nanded in Marathwada, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.

No warning has been indicated for southern Konkan and parts of western Maharashtra, although light to moderate rainfall has been predicted in some areas.

On Sunday, the orange alert is expected to shift towards north Madhya Maharashtra, with Dhule, Nandurbar, and the ghats of Nashik likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Madhya Maharashtra to see heavy rain, thunderstorms

As per IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are very likely at isolated places in Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, and its ghats, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Nandurbar, Ahilyanagar, Pune and its ghats, Solapur, Beed, Latur, and Dharashiv are likely to see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places.

On Sunday, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph is very likely at isolated places in Dhule, Nandurbar, and the ghats of Nashik.

Jalgaon, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and the ghats of Pune remain under a heavy rain and thunderstorm watch.

Kolhapur, Sangli, and parts of Satara are expected to see only light rain or thundershowers.
