Heatwave at isolated pockets in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar; light rains likely: IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, predicting heatwave conditions.

It said that light to moderate rains and thundershowers were very likely in some parts.

According to a weather bulletin, the IMD stated, "Heatwave in isolated pockets. Possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied with thunderstorm towards afternoon/evening."

A similar alert was issued for Thane district for May 28.

In a forecast for Thursday, the IMD said, hot and humid conditions were expected at isolated pockets in Mumbai and Palghar.

A yellow alert was also issued for parts of Maharashtra including Ratnagiri, Pune, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Beed and Latur.

It said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning , light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places.

Orange alert in Akola, Amravati and Yavatmal

In the weather bulletin, the IMD issued an orange alert, stating, "Heatwave was very likely at few places in Akola, Amravati and Yavatmal."

Heatwave in Vidarbha

Meanwhile, IMD had earlier issued a red alert for parts of Vidarbha till May 28 amid intensifying heatwave conditions.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity remained isolated with negligible intensity across Vidarbha over the last 24 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures continued to remain significantly above normal across the region.

The weather bulletin stated, "Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) likely at many places. Heatwave to severe heatwave likely at many places."

Red alert issued

A red alert was issued for parts of Maharashtra including Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli and Washim. The districts have been reeling under hot weather conditions.

The IMD warning that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely at many places over the next few days.

The weather department had earlier said a trough extending from the east-central Bay of Bengal to the southeast Arabian Sea persists across the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, south Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining Comorin area between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from May 28, officials said.
