Rain likely in Thane, Raigad; IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai and Palghar

Light rains or thundershowers were very likely in parts of Thane and Raigad districts in Maharashtra, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday evening, issuing a yellow alert for Mumbai and Palghar.

According to a weather bulletin, the IMD issued a yellow alert for Thane stating, "Hot and humid condition. Possibility of light rain or thundershowers towards afternoon or evening."

It said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning , light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places in Raigad. A similar alert was also issued for Ratnagiri, Pune, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed and Latur districts in Maharashtra.

The weather department said that hot and humid conditions were expected at isolated pockets in Mumbai and Palghar.

Orange alert in Akola and Yavatmal

In the weather bulletin, the IMD issued an orange alert, stating, "Heatwave was very likely at few places in Akola and Yavatmal."

Heatwave in Vidarbha

Meanwhile, IMD also issued a red alert for parts of Vidarbha till May 28 amid intensifying heatwave conditions.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity remained isolated with negligible intensity across Vidarbha over the last 24 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures continued to remain significantly above normal across the region.

"Heatwave to severe heatwave was very likely at many places. Warm night was to occur at isolated places."

Brahmapuri recorded the highest maximum temperature at 47.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Nagpur at 46.5 degrees Celsius. Washim registered the lowest minimum temperature at 27.4 degrees Celsius.

Red alert for severe heatwave conditions

Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Amravati have been placed under red alert, with the IMD warning that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely at many places over the next few days.

The weather agency added that maximum temperatures across Vidarbha ranged between 41.7 degrees Celsius and 47.6 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures ranged from 27.4 degrees Celsius to 32.5 degrees Celsius, both remaining above normal.

The IMD said a trough extending from the east-central Bay of Bengal to the southeast Arabian Sea persists across the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, south Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining Comorin area between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from May 28, officials said.
