Western Railway (WR) on Friday afternoon demolished the last 94 remaining structures at Garib Nagar, Bandra East more than five months after razing the rest of the shanty town between May 19 and 23.
According to WR, the surviving structures had been retained to facilitate rehabilitation of eligible project-affected persons (PAP). The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has since allotted alternative permanent accommodation to all 94 eligible PAP and handed over possession to them.
WR hopes to transform the area where the shanty town stood into an integrated railway complex, significantly enhancing its passenger-handling and operational capacity. The clearance of the land is said to enable the timely execution of critical infrastructure projects, benefiting passengers and strengthening Mumbai's suburban and long-distance railway connectivity and passenger amenities.
