In a major action against narcotics, the Navi Mumbai Police destroyed illegal drugs worth Rs 56.69 crore on Friday as part of its ongoing efforts to make the city drug-free, news agency PTI reported.
The disposal of the seized narcotics was carried out on June 26, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to the police, the destroyed drugs had been seized in 26 criminal cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Following all legal and environmental guidelines, the narcotics were disposed of at the government-authorised Mumbai Waste Management Company facility in Taloja. The process was carried out in the presence of Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe and other senior police officials, as reported by the news agency.
Addressing the media, Commissioner Milind Bharambe said the police are committed to eliminating the drug menace through the 'Nasha Mukt Navi Mumbai Abhiyan (Drug-Free Navi Mumbai Campaign)'.
He stressed that strict law enforcement alone is not enough and that creating awareness is equally important.
"Enforcement is only one side of the coin as prevention through education is equally vital in fighting the drug menace," Bharambe said.
Over the past two days, Navi Mumbai Police conducted a large-scale awareness drive across schools, colleges, residential societies, and public squares.
Educational programmes were organised at around 25 educational institutions, where more than 5,000 students were informed about the physical, psychological, and social dangers of drug abuse.
The campaign aims to encourage young people to stay away from drugs while making communities more aware of the risks associated with narcotics.
To encourage public participation, the Navi Mumbai Police also launched a dedicated 24-hour anti-drug helpline - 8828-112-112. Commissioner Bharambe urged citizens to use the helpline to report drug trafficking, peddling or any suspicious activities.
"Citizens can share information completely anonymously. We guarantee that the identity of the informant will be kept strictly confidential," he said.
The Police Commissioner added that the crackdown on drug cartels would become even more aggressive and systematic in the coming days and appealed to citizens to cooperate fearlessly in keeping Navi Mumbai free from drugs.
