Ten residents were safely evacuated after a minor fire broke out in the basement of a residential building in Thane city on Saturday morning, officials said.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred at Gautam House, a two-storey building located near the Naupada Police Station.
According to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the fire department received a call about the blaze at around 8.10 am.
"A call reporting a minor fire in rubber mats kept in the building's basement was received at around 8:10 am," Tadvi said.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the fire brigade, RDMC, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and Mahanagar Gas Limited, rushed to the spot.
As a precaution, rescue teams evacuated ten residents from the building to prevent smoke inhalation and ensure their safety in case the fire spread to the upper floors.
"They were rescued to prevent the fire from spreading to the upper floors and to safeguard them from suffering due to smoke and suffocation," Tadvi said.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within about 30 minutes through the joint efforts of the fire brigade and RDMC personnel.
Cooling operations were continuing at the site after the fire was extinguished.
Officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
In a separate incident, a car caught fire on the Thane-Nashik Highway near Majiwada in Thane district, causing traffic congestion on the busy stretch before firefighters brought the blaze under control, officials said.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the fire was reported at around 7.47 pm on Friday near Vijay Park, Kasarvadavali Naka.
The vehicle was travelling from Vikhroli to Lodha Amara in Kolshet when it caught fire.
The driver and his friend noticed the flames in time and managed to get out of the vehicle safely before the fire spread.
Fire brigade personnel, disaster management teams, traffic police and officers from the Kopri Police Station rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the alert.
The blaze was completely extinguished by around 8.20 pm using one fire engine and one rescue vehicle, preventing it from spreading to nearby vehicles.
Officials said the car was extensively damaged in the fire.
The incident caused traffic congestion on the Thane-Nashik Highway and the nearby expressway stretch around Majiwada.
After the fire was extinguished, traffic police arranged for the burnt vehicle to be removed with the help of a towing vehicle to restore smooth traffic movement.
Senior Police Inspector Dilip Patil of the Kopri Traffic Police branch supervised traffic regulation until normal movement resumed.
Officials said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Traffic gradually returned to normal after the damaged vehicle was cleared from the road.
