Thane monsoon: 18 killed, nearly 800 affected by floods, landslides and wall collapses

Eighteen people have died in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra's Thane district since the onset of the monsoon, while nearly 800 residents have been affected by floods, landslides, wall collapses and other weather-related incidents, officials said on Tuesday.

According to a district administration report, two of the fatalities were reported on Monday, taking the total death toll from rain-related incidents this monsoon to 18.

Four persons still missing

The report stated that 17 people have sustained injuries in various rain-related incidents across the district during the current monsoon season.

It also said that four persons have been missing since July 24 after being swept away in floodwaters or drowning in water bodies. Search efforts are continuing to trace them.

Nearly 800 people shifted to relief camps

The district administration said 229 families, comprising 797 people, have been affected by landslides, wall collapses, river flooding and other rain-induced disasters.

The affected families have been shifted to relief camps set up by the administration.

Thane, which borders Mumbai, witnessed several days of heavy rainfall this month, leading to flooding and structural damage in multiple areas.

Homes and public infrastructure damaged

According to the report, 187 houses have either been completely destroyed or partially damaged due to heavy rainfall.

In addition, five huts, a community hall and an anganwadi centre were damaged because of heavy rain and strong winds.

The inclement weather also caused losses to three poultry units in the district.

Relief operations continue

District authorities said relief, rescue and restoration work is continuing in the affected areas.

Officials are monitoring the situation as intermittent rainfall continues across parts of the district and have urged residents in vulnerable locations to remain alert and follow advisories issued by the administration.

IMD warns of torrential rain today across several states

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert warning of intense monsoon activity, including torrential rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several states on Monday.According to the latest IMD bulletin, the next 14 hours are expected to be particularly critical for several states as heavy rain and severe weather conditions intensify.

The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand throughout the week. Rainfall activity is also expected to intensify over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan from Monday onwards, with several places likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the week.
