A tremor of 3.7 magnitude was recorded in Maharashtra's coastal Palghar district on Thursday evening, officials said.
No loss of life or damage to property was reported.
Vivekanand Kadam, Chief of the Disaster Management Cell of Palghar said, the tremor was recorded at 7:16 pm with its epicenter at latitude 20.109 N and longitude 72.948 E at a depth of 7 km, as per PTI.
The coordinates correspond to a location in Talasari taluka, near the border with Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Gujarat, close to villages such as Sutrakar and Dhundalwadi.
The district, located to the north of Mumbai, often experiences mild seismic activity.
In a separate incident on Thursday, seven gas cylinders exploded after a fire broke out at a labour camp at a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation PAP project in Tata Nagar, Navghar Road, Mulund East, on Thursday afternoon, raising concerns about safety arrangements at the crowded workers' accommodation.
The fire was reported at 1.54 pm, following which the fire brigade arrived at the spot. The fire was declared Level-I by the Mumbai Fire Brigade officials at 2.05 pm. According to officials, all the workers were evacuated safely, and no casualties were reported.
DCP East Zone-III Abhaysingh Deshmukh said the fire was suspected to have started following a gas cylinder explosion. "Following the fire, seven gas cylinders exploded. Fire Brigade personnel are present at the spot, and firefighting operations are underway. No casualty or fatality has been reported so far," he said.
Five people were injured after a gas leak from a cylinder pipe led to a flare-up at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay campus on Thursday night, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a press release.
The incident was reported at 10.24 pm from Hostel No 6 on the Powai campus. According to the press release, the incident was reported by Rajawadi Hospital, following which police and BMC ward staff were mobilised.
As per information received from the medical officer concerned at Rajawadi Hospital, five people were injured in the incident and brought to the hospital for treatment.
