Traffic on Ghodbunder Road in Thane (West) was severely disrupted on Friday morning following a major multi-vehicle accident near Gaimukh Ghat on National Highway 48 (NH-48). At least 12 vehicles, including a heavy container truck, were involved in the collision, leaving four people injured.
According to officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell, the accident occurred around 7 am near the Gaimukh Toll Naka. A Tata container truck carrying an estimated 35-40 tonnes of cement bags was descending the Gaimukh ghat towards Thane when it allegedly rammed into vehicles travelling in the opposite direction towards Borivali. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene after the crash.
Emergency response teams from the Regional Disaster Management Cell, the fire brigade, city traffic police, and personnel from the Kasarvadavli Police Station rushed to the spot with rescue, towing and support vehicles. Oil leaked onto the road from the damaged vehicles, further worsening traffic conditions and posing a safety risk.
Four injured persons were admitted to Titan Hospital, Owla. They were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Shivkumar Yadav (56), who sustained serious head injuries; Taskin Sheikh (45), a passenger with minor facial injuries; Rambali Babulal (22), a car driver who suffered serious waist injuries; and Anita Perwal (45), another passenger who sustained minor facial injuries. Police said occupants of some other vehicles involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and sought treatment at private hospitals on their own.
Several vehicles, including cars, an auto-rickshaw and the container truck, were damaged in the collision. Traffic on both carriageways of Ghodbunder Road remained severely affected for nearly two hours, causing long queues and delays for commuters.
To prevent further accidents, disaster management and fire brigade personnel spread soil over the oil spill. All damaged vehicles were later removed from the roadway, following which traffic movement on Ghodbunder Road was fully restored, officials confirmed.
