A collision between two heavy vehicles during the early hours of Tuesday, April 28, disrupted traffic movement along the busy Thane-Shilphata stretch, officials from the Disaster Management Cell of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said.
As per the official statement, the incident was reported at around 3:16 am by the Shil Fire Station. The accident occurred near Dosti Building in Bholenath Nagar, Shilphata, on the carriageway heading from Thane towards Shilphata.
Preliminary information highlights that the driver of an Ashok Leyland container truck, identified as Mohammed Mumtaz, lost control of the vehicle while going from Gujarat to Pune.
The container carrying seven Tata cars, weighing approximately nine tonnes, rammed into the rear of a truck ahead of it.
The other truck was carrying nearly six tonnes of paint barrels. As per the officials, the truck was driven by Firoz Ali and owned by Ankush Baliya. It was travelling from Mankoli in Bhiwandi to Khalapur in Khopoli. Following the collision, several paint barrels fell onto the road, leading to a significant spillage that spread across the carriageway, posing a hazard to other motorists.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from Shil-Dighar Police, Traffic Police, the Fire Brigade, and the Disaster Management Cell, rushed to the spot. Two cranes, a fire tender, a rescue vehicle, and a pickup vehicle were deployed to manage the situation and clear the road.
While no serious injuries were reported during the crash, both drivers sustained minor injuries in the incident and were treated at the scene by the medical response team.
Traffic movement along the stretch slowed considerably due to the accident and subsequent clean-up operation. Fire Brigade and disaster response teams covered the spilt paint with soil to prevent further accidents.
Officials further said that the damaged vehicles were later shifted to the roadside with the help of cranes, and the road was cleared for traffic movement.
