A woman and her 8-year-old son was on Monday killed after a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus ran over them in Wadala area of Mumbai, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 3:10 pm when a BEST bus on route A-174, operated by SMTATPL (Daga Group Wetlease) from Anik Depot, was travelling in the up-direction towards Bharani Naka from Veer Kotwal Udyan, an official statement said.

According to initial reports, the bus driver, Bapurao Shivaji Nagbone (41), struck two pedestrians walking along the left side of the road -- 38-year-old woman who was later identified as Lioba Selveraj and her 8-year-old son Anthony Selveraj.

The front left tyre of the bus ran over the child's head, causing severe injuries.

The local police officials at the scene rushed the boy to KEM Hospital, but doctors declared him dead before admission at 3:40 pm, the statement said..

The mother, Lioba Selveraj, suffered serious injuries to her shoulder and both legs.

The bus conductor, Anil Maruti Sakhare (48), immediately took her to Sion Hospital, where doctors declared her dead at 4:25 pm during treatment, an official said.

Further investigations are underway, said a statement released by the BEST Command & Control Centre (Traffic).
