Dahi Handi is a vibrant and popular festival in Mumbai, celebrated annually as part of Janmashtami, the Hindu festival marking the birth of Lord Krishna

Known for its high-energy celebrations and competitive spirit, the city celebrates this festival with grand decorations, traditional rituals, and especially the thrilling Dahi Handi competitions

During the festival, amid chants of “Govinda Ala Re!” and pulsating beats of dhol-tasha troupes, participants called "Govindas" form human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot filled with yogurt (dahi) and other milk products, suspended high in the air

This act is a symbolic recreation of Lord Krishna's childhood fondness for butter and his playful attempts to steal it

Dahi Handi is inspired by the legend of young Krishna forming human pyramids with his friends to steal butter from pots hung from ceilings

In Mumbai, this has evolved into a competitive spectacle, attracting sponsorships, live coverage, and massive audiences

Certain areas in Mumbai, like Dadar, Parel, Lalbaug, Worli, and Thane (especially Tembhi Naka and Vartak Nagar), are known for their grand Dahi Handi celebrations with large crowds and competitive events

The event has now also become a platform for social messaging and skill development, with many mandals using it to train youth in coordination, trust, and leadership

The celebrations are marked by vibrant music, especially songs, and a high-spirited atmosphere as Govindas navigate through the city in trucks, tempos, and other vehicles
