For months, residents have been demanding a clear and consolidated rehabilitation plan, particularly after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured them in September that a solution would be worked out for all 19 affected buildings. PIC/ANUSHREE GAIKWAD

However, with no follow-up meetings or official directives, the sudden issuance of MHADA notices has only heightened their anxiety. PIC/ANUSHREE GAIKWAD

Heavy machinery, continuous hammering, and debris removal have left the area covered in dust, with several residents — especially children and the elderly — reporting respiratory discomfort and allergies. PIC/ANUSHREE GAIKWAD

On the day the demolition began, CM Fadnavis had promised a meeting with the residents within a week to finalise a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. However, that meeting has not taken place yet, leaving the tenants uncertain about their future. PIC/ANUSHREE GAIKWAD

On Wednesday, mid-day.com had reported that MHADA has begun searching for rehabilitation options within a 5-km radius for 83 families currently living in Haaji Noorani and Lakshmi Nivas — the two most severely affected structures in the area. PIC/ASHISH RAJE

However, despite the move, residents say they have received no official communication from MHADA regarding their relocation or timeline. PIC/ASHISH RAJE

According to MHADA officials, suitable transit accommodations are being identified close to the existing locality to ensure minimal displacement and disruption. PIC/ASHISH RAJE

“We are moving fast with the process now. Houses will be allotted according to residents’ existing carpet areas. Since every location has a different configuration, we’ll match the transit flat’s carpet area to its current one. Keys will likely be handed over within seven to 15 days,” said Kiran Mahajan, a MHADA official. PIC/ASHISH RAJE

While the progress around Haaji Noorani and Lakshmi Nivas offers a glimmer of hope, residents of the remaining 17 dilapidated buildings in Elphinstone continue to live in uncertainty. PIC/ASHISH RAJE
