The Thane Creek, stretching over 17 sq km amid the concrete jungles of Mumbai and Thane, serves as a habitat for around 200 bird species, many of which are migratory. Among these, the 'Rohit' or Flamingo is the center of attraction. Pic/ Darshan Ambre

The flamingo is a tall, pink bird with a downward-curved beak, long and graceful legs and neck, large wings, and a small tail

The Mangrove Cell has undertaken a major project to conserve bird life in the rich mangrove area of Thane Creek

Following the ‘Malvan Marine Sanctuary’ in Sindhudurg, this is the second marine sanctuary in Maharashtra

Birdwatching and ‘Flamingo Boat Rides’ are available for tourists to explore the creek

On August 15, 2022, Thane Creek was designated as a Ramsar wetland site

Thane Creek is one of the largest Ramsar sites, covering an area of 6,500 hectares, including an Eco-Sensitive Zone

It is also the first Ramsar site located within a metropolitan area. This is Maharashtra's third and India's 72nd site to be granted Ramsar status
