The officials said that like every year, large crowds were expected at popular locations such as Girgaon, Marine Drive, the Gateway of India, Juhu Beach and Bandra Bandstand

In parts of the city, apart from popular beaches, celebrations at hotels, restaurants and shopping malls are expected to continue into the early hours of Thursday

To prevent any untoward incidents, the police have put in place strict security measures across Mumbai. Police checkposts (nakabandis) will be set up at major junctions and important roads, while street patrolling will be intensified throughout the city

The police have warned that strict action will be taken against offences such as eve-teasing, the sale of illicit liquor, and drug-related activities

Citizens have been urged to celebrate responsibly and adhere to all rules to ensure a peaceful New Year
