With increasing number of cases of school bus operators not adhering to safety norms, the city traffic police caught 1,334 vehicles transporting schoolchildren in the last four months, compared to 2,430 cases last year. The drive will be intensified once schools reopen in June.
The traffic police stepped up their safety drive following an incident where an unauthorised school van, carrying
14 children, entered a wrong lane and met with an accident at Sopan Baug Chowk on Pune-Solapur Highway last month.

The department claims that vehicles registered for commercial purposes only were seen ferrying school students. They are determined to take strict action against the perpetrators, which include seizing vehicles that flout the norms.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vishwas Pandhare, said, "We are checking whether the vans ferrying schoolchildren have valid permits, and the safety measures the owners are taking.
With the increasing number of traffic breach cases involving school transport vehicles, it is important that we carry out such drives and take immediate action."
He added, "I have instructed all 32 traffic police inspectors across the city to keep a tab on school transport vehicles. During the random checks, if I find any vehicle not abiding by the law on the roads, then the concerned police inspector of the area will be suspended."
