In a late-night security incident in West Bengal, personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) successfully thwarted an attack on the residence of a protected political figure, highlighting the challenges of VIP security during the ongoing assembly elections.
With polling underway in the state and the next phase scheduled for April 29, the law and order situation remains sensitive. According to officials, the incident took place late on April 26 near Jagdal Police Station, where BJP MLA Arjun Singh and his son, Pawan Singh - both classified as âY' category protectees - were confronted by a group of unidentified individuals.
CISF's Special Security Group (SSG) personnel responded immediately, escorting both leaders safely from the area and ensuring their secure return to their residences.
Shortly after the initial confrontation, a group of assailants reportedly targeted Pawan Singh's residence. The attackers allegedly pelted stones, hurled crude bombs, and fired gunshots, escalating the situation into a serious security breach.
CISF personnel stationed at the residence acted promptly. Led by Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar, the team engaged in defensive action to repel the attackers. Officials said retaliatory firing was carried out strictly in self-defence and to protect the VIP.
During the exchange, Constable Yogesh sustained a gunshot injury to his left calf while confronting the attackers. Despite the injury, the CISF team maintained control of the situation, forcing the assailants to flee. No harm was reported to the protected individuals.
Constable Yogesh was shifted to Apollo Hospital Kolkata, where he is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
Senior officials from the CISF and other security agencies visited the hospital to assess his condition. Among them were CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan, Border Security Force Director General Praveen Kumar, and CISF Additional Director General Sudhir Kumar. Officials assured the injured constable and his family of full medical support and necessary assistance.
The CISF currently provides protection to nearly 200 VIPs across the country through its specialised security units. Personnel assigned to such duties undergo rigorous selection and advanced training tailored to high-risk scenarios.
