Gujarat: Four minor girls drown in Bhavnagar's Bor Talav, one rescued

A 12-year-old girl was rescued and sent to a government hospital for treatment while four others drowned, an official said

Four minor girls, including two sisters, drowned after venturing into a lake for a bath in Gujarat's Bhavnagar city on Tuesday, officials said, reported the PTI.

The incident took place at Bor Talav in Bhavnagar which is a man-made lake in the city, Chief Fire Officer Pradyumnasinh Jadeja said, as per the PTI.

Five minors, in the age group of 9 to 17 years, accompanied a woman to the lake. While the woman was washing clothes at the lakeside, the minors jumped into the water body to take a bath and all of them started drowning, Jadeja said, according to the PTI.

A 12-year-old girl was rescued and sent to a government hospital for treatment while four others drowned, he said.

"We were informed about the incident at around 12.20 pm and a rescue team was immediately rushed to the spot," the official said, as per the PTI.

The deceased have been identified as Aryanaben Dabhi (17), Kajal (12), Rashi (9) and her sister Komal (13), an official from Bortalav police station said, the news agency reported on Tuesday.

The rescued girl is the sibling of the two sisters who drowned, the police said.

5 drown in Ganga in Bihar's Begusarai

Meanwhile in an another incident in Bihar's Begusarai, on Monday, At least five persons, all men aged between 17 and 20, drowned in Ganga in Begusarai district on Monday, police said, reported the PTI.

The incident happened at Simaria Ghat where residents of a nearby village had come for a holy dip, said Neeraj Kumar Chaudhary, the SHO of Chakia police station, the news agency reported on Monday.

"They had come for a holy dip after a 'mundan' (tonsure) ceremony. After they were swept by a strong current, divers were pressed into service. Five bodies have been recovered," he said, as per the PTI.

Barauni Circle Officer Suraj Kant said assistance would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased in accordance with the state government's policy.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also issued a statement expressing grief over the incident, according to a PTI report.
