Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed the government in the state for the third straight time.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma during a grand ceremony held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior BJP and NDA leaders from across the country.

Four ministers inducted into new Assam Cabinet

Along with Sarma, four legislators also took oath as ministers in the new Council of Ministers.

Those sworn in included BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) leader Charan Boro.

Neog, Bora and Boro were part of Sarma's previous Cabinet. In the outgoing government, Neog handled the finance portfolio, Bora oversaw the agriculture department and Boro was in charge of transport.

Rameswar Teli, a former Union minister, returned to state politics after previously serving in the Union government.

Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has also been named as the NDA's candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Top NDA leaders attend oath-taking ceremony

Apart from Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah, the ceremony witnessed the presence of Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita.

Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states also attended the event, which marked the formal beginning of the NDA government's new term in Assam.

The ceremony was held amid tight security arrangements and drew large crowds of BJP workers and supporters.

NDA secures dominant mandate in Assam elections

The BJP-led NDA returned to power after securing an emphatic victory in the Assam Assembly elections.

The NDA won 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, with the BJP securing 82 seats on its own. Alliance partners AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.

The result gave the alliance a commanding majority and ensured the continuation of BJP-led governance in Assam for another term.

Sarma strengthens BJP's position in Northeast

This marks Sarma's second consecutive term as Chief Minister after first assuming office in 2021.

Under his leadership, the BJP has significantly expanded its political influence in Assam and across the Northeast.

Sarma had earlier been unanimously elected leader of both the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party before staking claim to form the government.

The latest election result further consolidated the BJP's position in Assam, with the party presenting the outcome as a mandate in favour of its governance and development agenda in the state.
