Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw will lay the foundation stone for Pune Yard Remodelling, construction of six new platforms and other infrastructure works at Pune Railway Station on Wednesday, according to Central Railway.
The ceremony will be held in the presence of other dignitaries.
Pune Junction Railway Station is one of the busiest stations on Central Railway and serves as the main rail gateway for Pune city and the surrounding industrial and educational belt. The station currently handles more than 200 trains daily, including originating, terminating and passing services, and caters to over 1.5 lakh passengers per day.
According to Central Railway, the existing station infrastructure is operating close to capacity. At present, Pune Junction has six main platforms for mail, express and passenger services, of which only two are capable of handling long-distance trains with more than 22 coaches. The station has two entry and exit points, three foot overbridges and associated passenger amenities.
To address rising passenger demand and operational constraints, infrastructure works worth Rs 473 crore have been taken up to make Pune a future-ready mega terminal. The project includes comprehensive yard remodelling, construction of six additional platforms and development of a third entry.
As part of the proposed works, six new full-length platforms numbered 7 to 12 are being constructed to handle additional traffic and longer trains. Existing platforms 2 to 6 are also being extended to accommodate 24 to 26-coach trains. The removal of the Double Diamond Slip (DDS) is planned to improve operational flexibility.
The project also includes two up and down run-through lines for faster train movement and a third additional line between Hadapsar and Ghorpadi Coaching Maintenance Complex for decongestion and segregation of suburban and long-distance traffic.
In addition, a new electronic interlocking system along with a new EI building and three object controller buildings is being commissioned to enhance safety and operational efficiency. An electric loco shed is also planned to improve maintenance reliability.
Passenger amenities under the project include cover over platforms, improved lighting, seating, signage, train indication boards, toilet blocks, and water facilities. A new third entry and exit point at RB Mill Road is also being developed with booking office, waiting area, and other facilities to reduce congestion at the main entrance.
A six-metre-wide foot overbridge and a skywalk connecting the existing and new platform blocks are also part of the development plan. A permanent holding area will be created to manage crowding during peak and festival periods.
Central Railway said the yard remodelling and expansion works will significantly enhance capacity, decongest the station and improve passenger experience in the region.
