Police have arrested another person in connection with the killing of a man over a financial dispute in Maharashtra's Nanded district, taking the total number of people arrested in the case to six, officials said on Wednesday.
The latest arrest was made as police continued their investigation into the killing of Inderjit Singh Bawari, who was allegedly attacked following a dispute linked to an unpaid loan. Investigators are examining the role of each accused and the circumstances that led to the fatal attack.
According to police, Bawari and his associate were engaged in finance-related work at an agency. As part of their work, they had seized a motorcycle belonging to one of the accused after the owner allegedly failed to pay loan instalments.
The seizure of the motorcycle reportedly led to animosity between Bawari and the accused. Police suspect that the dispute later escalated and resulted in the attack on Bawari.
The accused allegedly followed Bawari to a petrol pump in Dhanegaon on August 8, where he had gone to refuel his motorcycle.
Police said the accused attacked Bawari with a knife at the petrol pump. He sustained injuries in the assault and later died, officials said.
Following the incident, police launched an investigation and arrested five persons allegedly linked to the crime. The arrests were made as investigators worked to establish the sequence of events leading to the killing and identify those involved in the alleged attack.
The sixth accused, who had been absconding after the incident, was arrested from the Govardhan Ghat area on Tuesday, police said.
With the latest arrest, six persons have now been taken into custody in connection with Bawari's killing. Police are questioning the accused to determine their individual roles and establish whether the attack was planned in advance.
Investigators are also examining the alleged planning behind the attack and the links between the accused, officials said.
The police are probing the role of each accused, the alleged planning of the attack, links among them, involvement of other persons and the weapons used in the crime, they added.
