Maharashtra continued to reel under hot and dry conditions on Monday, with several parts of the Vidarbha region recording temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Nagpur recorded the state's highest maximum temperature at 43.2 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal, as Vidarbha remained the hottest region in Maharashtra.
Other cities in the region also witnessed high temperatures, with Wardha recording 42.5 degrees Celsius, Akola 42.3 degrees Celsius, and Amravati, and Gondia 42.2 degrees Celsius each. Chandrapur recorded a maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius.
In Central Maharashtra, Malegaon was the hottest location at 41.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Jalgaon at 40.5 degrees Celsius.
Pune recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius, which was 1.3 degrees Celsius above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 25.8 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees Celsius above normal.
The Konkan-Goa region remained warm and humid. The Island City recorded a maximum temperature of 35.0 degrees Celsius while the suburbs recorded 35.1 degrees - about 1.3-1.4 degrees Celsius above normal. The minimum temperatures were recorded at 30.0 degrees Celsius and 29.9 degrees Celsius in the city and the suburbs, respectively, which was 2.5-2.8 degrees Celsius above normal.
The state's lowest minimum temperature was recorded in Dharashiv (Osmanabad) at 19 degrees Celsius, which was 3.6 degrees Celsius below normal.
Most parts of Maharashtra remained dry during the day. Pune's seasonal rainfall stood at 0 mm against the normal 44.5 mm. Isolated rainfall activity was reported from a few locations, including Mahabaleshwar, which received 3 mm rain, and Amravati, which recorded 20 mm rainfall.
The IMD has forecast mainly clear skies turning partly cloudy by afternoon or evening on Tuesday. Day temperatures are expected to remain around 37 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures are likely to stay near 25 degrees Celsius.
Vidarbha is expected to continue experiencing severe heat conditions, while hot and dry weather is likely to persist over parts of Central Maharashtra. Konkan and Goa may witness warm and humid conditions, with the possibility of light rain at isolated places.
The weather department has advised people to avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses, particularly in Vidarbha, Marathwada and parts of Central Maharashtra.
