One person died after a landslide struck Patal village in Maval tehsil of Pune district on Monday. Two more people are feared trapped beneath the debris, officials said.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, triggering an emergency response from local authorities, ANI reported.
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), local administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are carrying out an intensive search and rescue operation at the site.
Following a distress call, the District Information Office requested immediate assistance from the NDRF. A specialised 30-member rescue team from the 5th Battalion, based in Pune, was rushed to the affected village.
The operation is being led by Inspector Ravinder under the supervision of Assistant Commandant Chandraketu Sharma. The team comprises two senior officers and 27 trained disaster response personnel, reported ANI.
The rescue team left for the village at 5:50 am with advanced rescue equipment and disaster management tools to safely navigate the unstable terrain and remove debris.
The landslide comes as Maharashtra continues to witness intense monsoon activity following the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Several parts of the state received heavy rainfall on Monday morning, increasing the risk of landslides, flooding and disruption to transport services.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) 8 am weather forecast, Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to witness very heavy, continuous rainfall during the day.
The city recorded an average rainfall of 105.24 mm in the last 24 hours. The eastern suburbs received 161.11 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 159.40 mm.
Authorities have forecast a high tide of 4.08 metres at 3:56 pm, followed by a low tide of 1.52 metres at 10:13 pm. On Tuesday, another high tide of 3.44 metres is expected at 4:38 am, followed by a low tide of 1.86 metres at 9:59 am, the news agency said.
Officials have urged citizens to remain alert and avoid travelling to landslide-prone and low-lying areas as heavy rainfall continues across Maharashtra.
