The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu over the next five days, with several districts expected to receive heavy rain as conditions become favourable for the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, reported the IANS.
Weather officials said the monsoon is likely to advance into Kerala within the next three to four days.
According to the weather department, a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Kerala is helping create conditions suitable for the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon.
The system is currently located at an altitude between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above sea level.
The RMC has warned of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in at least 16 districts on Monday.
The districts likely to be affected include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai.
Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is also expected in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The weather department said similar weather conditions are likely to continue on 1 and 2 June.
Between 2 and 4 June, rainfall activity is expected to intensify further in western and northern parts of the state.
Districts including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai are likely to receive heavy rainfall during this period.
Heavy showers are also forecast for the hilly areas of Tirunelveli, as well as Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts.
On 4 June, heavy rain is expected in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari.
Rainfall activity is expected to reduce slightly on June 5 and 6.
However, light to moderate showers are likely to continue across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The RMC has also issued a marine warning for coastal areas.
Strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin Sea between May 31 and June 4.
Similar conditions are forecast over parts of the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and adjoining regions of the Arabian Sea.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the affected sea areas during the warning period and to exercise caution along the coast.
