A crane collapsed onto an electricity transformer and overhead lines near Jyotiba Temple in Talwade, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), disrupting power supply to over 8600 consumers and raising safety concerns. The area houses several manufacturing units and the Talwade IT Park.
The crane hit a 22 kV line linked to the Devi Indrayani Switching Station, bringing down a transformer and multiple poles, and affecting Dehugaon and Talwade feeders. Officials said nearly 1910 industrial units and 6700 homes faced outages, halting operations in the industrial belt.
The incident occurred on one of the busiest routes to Talwade IT Park and MIDC units on Thursday, with concerns raised over how narrowly a major disaster had been averted.
An MSDCL spokesperson said a police complaint has been registered against the crane owner, and an investigation is underway to determine accountability. Meanwhile, power utility teams have begun emergency restoration work on a war footing, with replacement of damaged poles and rewiring operations in progress.
Mihir Sonawane, a regular commuter, said, "The incident highlights glaring lapses in safety protocols. Large-scale development work is underway, but adequate precautions are missing. Thousands use this route daily, and congestion is already a regular issue."
Talwade resident Swarali Kumbhar, said, "I travel on this route daily to pick up my children. Seeing such a massive crane collapse in the middle of the road was shocking. There should be proper safety mechanisms. The thought of what could have happened is frightening."
People are questioning the safety of using heavy machines in busy areas. With no barricades or traffic control, many suspect negligence. Additionally, Pune's 40 degrees Celsius heat has made the long power outage unbearable for both residents and workers.
