A 12-year-old boy drowned in Ghod river in Shirur village during the Ganesha idol immersion on the last day of the festival on Sunday evening.

The deceased, identified as Vaibhav alias Krushna Sanjay Kalme (12), was a resident of Karde road, Karegawata, in Shirur died while he along with his family had gone to immerse their Ganpati idol. On Monday, his body was recovered from the Ghod river. Shirur police have registered a case of accidental death at present and investigating the case.

Vaibhav, a class seventh student was studying in Shirur-based Zilla Parishad school.

According to Shirur police, ''Kalme, the deceased's father, hails from Latur and currently residing at Shirur was working in Ranjangoan MIDC. On Sunday, since there was water shortage in their village, the family had hired a tempo in which they had kept all Ganesh idols from their neighbours so that they can immerse them in one location.They then travelled to Karegoan Ghat, which was some 60 kilometers from their house.''

He stated, ''After immersing some 20 idols of their neighbours, the family was heading back when they noticed that Vaibhav was missing.''
