Public outrage has resurfaced in the 2024 Pune Porsche crash case after a viral video allegedly showed members of the accused Agarwal family celebrating following the Supreme Court's decision to grant bail in the evidence tampering and crash case, as per ANI.
Reacting sharply to the development, Suresh Koshta, father of victim Ashwini, said the celebrations reflected a complete lack of fear of law and accountability.
"It must be a practice in their society to kill two people and then celebrate... They are mocking common citizens," he told ANI.
Koshta questioned whether the current legal system was strict enough to discourage reckless behaviour and crime. "There is no fear of the law anymore," he said, adding that legal provisions relating to juveniles were also being misused.
He further criticised the difference between lower court actions and decisions taken later in higher courts. "If one is awarded punishment by the High Court, they are let go by the Supreme Court. This encourages crime," he said, reported the news agency.
"Until laws like those in Muslim countries 'blood for blood' are brought in India, nothing is going to improve," Koshta said, while stressing the need for stricter punishment to deter such crimes. "How can this be reined in? How can a message be sent out if the law is not strict?" the father further asked.
He argued that stricter laws and tougher punishment are necessary to create fear of the law and prevent such incidents from recurring. "The Supreme Court should pass judgments that instil fear of the law among people," reported the news agency.
Koshta also demanded cancellation of bail for the accused and sought strict action against everyone allegedly involved in the case.
"His bail should be revoked, and his parents should be jailed. If it comes before the Supreme Court, they should not be granted bail," he added, according to the news agency.
The case relates to a May 2024 crash in Pune in which two people were killed after a Porsche car, allegedly driven rashly by a juvenile, hit them.
Investigators later alleged that attempts were made to tamper with blood samples and medical evidence to protect the accused. The case also included allegations that payments were made to manipulate the medical reports.
In February, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to three accused in the evidence tampering case while imposing strict conditions, including that they should not misuse their liberty.
During the hearing, the apex court observed that although the incident raised serious concerns regarding reckless behaviour and parental responsibility, continued detention at that stage would violate personal liberty under the circumstances of the case.
