Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim here over breakfast and discussed India-Malaysia ties as well as global and regional issues of importance.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also present during the meeting. The Congress put out pictures and a video of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi from the meeting with Ibrahim.

In a post on X in Malay language, Ibrahim said, "Had the opportunity once again to meet my good friend, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Indian Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, this morning over breakfast."

This brief meeting provided space for us to exchange views on the latest international and regional developments, the visiting Malaysian prime minister said.

Ibrahim has come to attend the BRICS summit here.

Gandhi also shared pictures from the meeting on his WhatsApp channel and said he had a warm and engaging conversation with Ibrahim.

The meeting comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ibrahim held talks focusing on cooperation in the areas of trade, semiconductors, infrastructure and defence. The two leaders had met on the margins of the BRICS Summit here.

Malaysia is a partner country in the BRICS grouping. It is also a key partner country for India within the ASEAN grouping.

Ibrahim had also met Gandhi during his visit to India in August, 2024. In December 2024, condoling the passing away of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Ibrahim had paid a moving tribute and called him "my mitra, my bhai".

This was Rahul Gandhi's first meeting with a visiting dignitary after over a year. He had met visiting Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on September 16, 2025.

In December last year, Gandhi had alleged that the government tells visiting foreign dignitaries not to meet the Leader of the Opposition due to its "insecurity".

Gandhi's remarks had ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's then two-day visit to India.

The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha had alleged that it is a tradition that visiting foreign dignitaries meet the LoP but Modi and the Ministry of External Affairs were not following this norm.
