The New Year mood begins as we are on the last leg of 2025. The party-hearty are sure to be on the streets, congregate at hotels, bars, pubs and homes. Public spaces, too, will be crowded with merry Mumbaikars bringing in the New Year in the way they believe is best.
One perennial party must is safety, not just your own and but that of others, too. Party spaces must have enough exits for any emergency. These must be well-lit and visible so that in case of any unfortunate event people can make their way out with some surety and there is no stampede. Ensure there is an announcement system that works well. Designate staffers who will be in charge of announcements and information for those partying at the venue.
This is a charged mix - alcohol, crowds, youthful energy and adrenalin is expected at parties but it can also be dangerous. The management needs to have a tight rein on goings on. Party venues should have already rehearsed their December 31 game plan so they are prepared for the city's big night.
Women's access to public spaces needs to be respected. They can often become caught up in a crowd and sexually harassed. We need sharp CCTV surveillance at all times but this is especially helpful on such days. Police patrols are a must. What we need is a change in mindset, where women are respected in all spaces.
Drink with restraint and maturity. Know your limits and hire drivers if you are going to be using your vehicle and must drink.
A great way to usher in New Year 2026 is on a good, cheery note. Responsible, smooth, hassle free - let your hair down but do so with no harm to others.
