This edit space had highlighted earlier, referencing the recent NEET paper leak that it is very important to plug question paper leaks at every level. It said that immediate investigation and action must focus on the current NEET leak, with the police tracing what is sure to be a network involving certain insiders too. It was time to actually dig deep and pull the entire festering and foetid cheating system out by its roots.
After that, we need a similar approach to other leaks permeating our academic system, eroding trust in it and treating students' futures like play.
In a follow-up to that, in what is one of the biggest current controversies, we learn that a 17-year-old student from Curtorim, Goa, died by suicide at his residence, distressed by the cancellation of the NEET following a paper leak controversy.
While the police say, predictably, that investigations are on, it shows us the importance of mental health for students. Those affected must have recourse to a dedicated helpline set up expressly for this purpose. While friends and family can be effective support systems, the helplines should of course have trained, mental health volunteers who notice red flags quickly and can inform relevant persons/families in case of extreme distress or when they think the youngster is careening dangerously close to the edge.
Students must be aware of such a helpline. Similarly, when there are such cases, a special outreach is needed. Either have a national number or state-specific helpline. Keep it accessible, counsellors aware, empathetic, and informed and quick action when needed. That may be a lifesaver.
