Concerns over Artificial Intelligence (AI) development grew after Google DeepMind researcher Josh Engels left the company's AGI safety team to join evaluation group METR.
Despite enjoying his work and declining competing offers from OpenAI and Anthropic, Engels left because he believes advanced AI presents a terrifying risk of causing immense harm within the next five years.
He warned that tech companies racing toward superintelligence face dangerous consequences from recursive self improvement, in which AI systems build increasingly capable successors, if critical safety alignment fails to keep pace with capability gains.
