A 28-year-old man from Punjab was shot dead in New York City while he was delivering pizza, prompting the Indian Consulate General in New York to express condolences and assure all possible assistance to his family.
Gurdeep Singh, a native of Kapurthala in Punjab, was killed in a shooting incident in Brooklyn on August 21 (local time). According to an NDTV report, Singh had travelled to the United States 13 years ago after taking a loan, with the hope of earning a livelihood and providing a better future for his parents in India.
According to local media reports, the shooting is suspected to have taken place during an attempted robbery. The unidentified assailant reportedly fled the scene after shooting Singh.
Police officers responding to the incident found the victim with a gunshot wound to his chest. CBS News reported that paramedics rushed Singh to a hospital for treatment, but doctors later pronounced him dead.
The authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting so far.
Following the incident, the Indian Consulate General in New York expressed grief over Singh's death and said its officials were in contact with his family.
The Consulate said it was deeply saddened by the "untimely demise" of Singh, describing him as an Indian national who had "tragically lost his life" in the Brooklyn shooting.
The mission conveyed its condolences to Singh's family and assured them of assistance during the difficult time.
Meanwhile, investigators are examining CCTV footage from the neighbourhood in an effort to identify the suspect involved in the shooting.
Officials said the investigation into the incident is currently underway. The authorities are expected to gather further evidence and examine available footage as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
No arrest has been reported so far, and further details regarding the identity of the suspected attacker or the motive behind the incident are awaited.
The Indian mission's intervention comes as the investigation continues into the death of the Punjab-born man, who had moved to the US more than a decade ago in search of better economic opportunities.
